It has established innovative engineering hubs, helicopter maintenance facilities and specialist avionic developments and support capability together with a unique Naval Shore Integration & Test Facility in partnership with the Commonwealth of Australia.
Leonardo is a true long-term Australian Prime System Integrator of capability to the Australian Defence Force. The company is also actively engaged with Australian suppliers and is undertaking a comprehensive knowledge transfer programme into both the Electronics, Defence & Security Systems sector and the local supply chain.
Leonardo's structure is organised into seven Divisions, comprising brands such as Selex ES Australia and Augusta Westland Australia. The Company also operates through subsidiaries and joint ventures, with important suppliers to the Australian market, such as Leonardo DRS, MBDA, JV Eurotorp, ATR and Partech Systems.
Selex ES Australia was appointed as Prime Systems Integrator for the multi million-dollar SEA1442 Phase 4 project. Leveraging a new facility and local capability, Selex ES commenced execution and delivery of the contract to install the New Generation Naval Communications Systems on Australia’s Anzac Class frigate fleet in 2013.
Based in Port Melbourne, Selex ES is a modern facility and meeting space that is accredited for use on Australian Government projects together with secure equipment and data storage. The facility also boasts the state of the art SEA 1442 Ph4 Systems Integration and Test Facility. Also included is a project management office, full engineering and logistics capability, technical Service Desk and ongoing support service. This capability will support the ANZAC upgrade warranty and support requirements as well as being leveraged for current and future programs of work. A comprehensive knowledge transfer program ensures that the Company continues to grow local capability across it employees and whole supply chain.
The experience and knowledge gained on the SEA1442 Ph4 program places Leonardo in an unrivalled prime position for all future naval communications programs. Each offering able to promote commonality, reduced risk and Life Cycle Cost affordability.
Selex ES Australia is also poised to take an innovative new product to market, designed as one of the foundation engineering solutions for the SEA1442 Ph4 program. The TSIS1044 is a ‘collaborative’ data link product providing high data rate (HDR) line of sight (LOS). This allows bearers to transmit and receive high data rate radio frequency IP network connection for ship to ship networking. This together with the SEA1442 communication solution provides the new generation defence communication solution for all naval surface vessels.
Leveraging a wide range of defence capabilities Leonardo has supplied 12,000 personal role radios to both the Australian Army and Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF); provided the Tetra infrastructure for the Roy Hill Mining Project in Western Australia; and equiped the Australian Army with counter IED equipment. Leonardo has also enjoyed wider industry success working exclusively with the Queensland Police to introduce the Automated Numberplate Recognition technology. This technology is now being showcased to Law Enforcement Agencies across Australia. Leonardo has also provided Security solutions for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
Leonardo Helicopters (formerly Agusta Westland) is based at Essendon Fields Victoria and is a full-service operation undertaking logistics management, aircraft assembly and maintenance and other related support functions. Engineering activities include aircraft assembly and disassembly for transport by air and sea, scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, aircraft modifications and deployed support to customer maintenance activities. The AW139, AW169 AW189 models are part of a family of new generation helicopters, all featuring the same design philosophy and the same certification and safety standards. Leonardo Helicopters also boasts a new generation Rotary Wing Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) in the AW Hero. Typical customers for the Helicopters business are emergency services, offshore operators, government and private customers.
