Description

The Humanihut Field Infrastructure System (HFIS) was designed by Managing Director Neale Sutton, as a solution to humanitarian crisis through the delivery of an entire temporary infrastructure system which incorporates accommodation, clean drinking water, sewerage management and power generation.

From humble beginnings, Humanihut now supplies temporary infrastructure to the global humanitarian, emergency management and construction industries.

The climate controlled HFIS is eight times more logistically efficient than other temporary buildings and delivers measurable improvement over tents. A short-term, high density HFIS Barracks, housing up to 192 personnel, can be established in approximately 1 day.

The HFIS is designed with a unique folding wall system, allowing eight-Huts to pack into a shipping container for efficient transportation and storage. Seals at all folds provide a complete environmental barrier.  All components, accessories, and necessary utilities are integrated for rapid deployment and ease of establishment, meaning the HFIS can operate independently without access to mains water, power, and wastewater infrastructure, or it can easily connect to main services.

With a 20+ year lifespan, the HFIS is easily redeployed as many times as necessary, offering a scalable and flexible infrastructure solution which aligns with ADF operational requirements.

The HFIS has been specifically designed and engineered to meet defence’s operational, safety, and environmental obligations. The UV stabilised wall and ceiling panels are constructed from Colourbond® steel coated high-density foam core insulation, and powder-coated aluminium frames providing superior quality and longevity.

With a steel and marine-grade plywood base, each Hut is solid skinned, climate-controlled, and thermally insulated throughout to R1.0-1.5 rating. Able to be established on a greenfield site or hard standing, each deployment aims to have a minimal environmental impact with all essential services designed for above ground installation. When the HFIS has fulfilled its operational purpose, it can be rapidly disestablished and redeployed to a new location or stored in preparation for future operational activity.

The innovative design of 8 Huts flat packed in to one shipping container provides logistical efficiency and reduced site storage requirements when not in use.

With military and commercial land, air, rail, or sea capability, the HFIS can be deployed directly to site and is customisable including:

  • Accommodation and living facilities
  • Office and briefing rooms
  • Communications and logistics spaces
  • Storage and warehousing
  • Recreation and mess areas
  • Bathroom facilities with laundry or toilet options
  • Security checkpoints
  • Healthcare: from a small treatment area to a fully deployed field hospital

A simple “click and connect” system means no on-site construction is required. The HFIS Basecamp, which comprises 32 Huts and 6 bathrooms, can accommodate up to 256 ADF personnel, be established in one day, and is delivered in 7 containers. When deployed to Kangaroo Island during the 2019/2020 Black Summer Bushfires, untrained ADF personnel assisted the South Australian State Emergency Service to redeploy the HFIS when it came under ember attack, proving how easy the system is to establish with minimal training and no prior knowledge.

The HFIS can provide a vital element of the ADF’s Combat Service Support (CSS) capability and delivers a modular and scalable operational infrastructure system to provide timely support to deployed JTF elements. With suitable ballistic protection, the HFIS can provide the ADF with threat-appropriate infrastructure in support of the full range of military operations.

The HFIS has been recognised as an innovative and disruptive product by:

  • Disrupt 100
  • Good Design Australia: Best in Class Award
  • Business SA Design for Export: Design Strategy Award
  • Good Design Australia: Engineering Award
  • Defence Industry Awards: Estate and Infrastructure Business of the Year
  • London Design Awards Gold Winner Product Design – Engineering

Additionally, Humanihut offers complete turnkey facilities management solutions that can be customised to support domestic defence activities such as Talisman Sabre and domestic and offshore HADR.

Humanihut offers defence an innovative solution to a range of infrastructure requirements and is:

  • rapidly deployable and quick to dis-establish.
  • transportable by sea, air, and land
  • click and connect assembly, no on-site construction.
  • fully integrated components, accessories, and necessary utilities
